SALARY:

$15.00 – 15.90 per hour, depending on experience. Plus, excellent fringe benefits

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

High School Diploma or equivalent

Preferred:

One year of related experience

Additional Eligibility Requirements:

Valid Arizona driver’s license and the ability to drive or operate college-owned vehicles or equipment

Classification:

Non-exempt

Position Type & Work Schedule:

Full-time, non-exempt position-overtime eligible with supervisor’s approval

40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 8 hours per day

12 months per year

Start time will vary between 5:00 am and 7:00 am, depending on the season

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of and ability to follow college policies and procedures

Knowledge of general grounds keeping practices and irrigation systems

Skill operating relevant equipment, power and hand tools

Skill in managing one’s own time

Ability to follow instructions

Ability to multi-task and organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion, with an attention to detail

Ability to work independently, while contributing to team environment

Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions and take appropriate action, and resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes

Ability to complete all departmental and/or institutional mandatory training or development

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other departmental staff, students, and the public.

Physical Demands:

Essential functions of this position require: Manual dexterity, large motor skills, ability to communicate, lifting, kneeling, squatting, climbing, crawling, stooping, turning/twisting, balancing, reaching and handling with varying frequencies

Heavy work: Occasional lifting and carrying objects up to 75 pounds; frequent lifting and carrying, pushing or pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds; and/or continuous lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling 10-20 pounds

Able to tolerate working in various weather conditions, including extreme sunlight, heat, cold, wind, and humidity

Note:

May need to work overtime or may need to report to work for emergencies

On-call (on a rotation)

SUMMARY OF FUNCTION:

Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to perform a variety of work involving grounds and landscape maintenance of college land, lawns, gardens, and sports field. Employees in this classification are responsible for accomplishing a daily routine of general and preventative maintenance tasks that provide the employees, students, and general public with an environmentally safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient area. May work independently or as a member of a crew.

The Groundskeeper is the first level in the Goundkeeper job family, an entry-level position, where incumbents perform physical labor as part of a work crew.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

Serves Students. Removes weeds, blows, sweeps, rakes, and removes trash and debris from all exterior property such as walkways, culverts, retention ponds, roadways, planters, lawns, landscaping, athletic fields, ponds, undeveloped property, and parking areas. Maintains in-ground drains and culverts.

Keep lawns and athletic fields trimmed in a neat and orderly fashion using various lawn care equipment such as weed-eaters, trimmers, edgers, blowers, and other equipment.

Plants and cultivates trees, grass, flowers, and shrubs. Spades and otherwise prepare grounds for planting.

Performs minor trimming projects on trees and bushes using pruners and shears.

Assist in the maintenance of parking lots, sidewalks, walls, and fences, including patching and painting.

Performs daily check on tools and equipment, including preventative maintenance and minor repairs.

Assists in irrigation system repairs and construction projects. Digs trenches, unloads and relocates material, and cleans tools and equipment.

Controls building doors during an active fire alarm.

Support and participate in strategic planning initiatives and perform other duties as assigned.
